What ethos guides our work?

We aim to foster Carmelite spirituality for the benefit of all, by means of articles crafted in accessible language. We seek not just to inform, but to encourage and reanimate our readers towards the path of Christian perfection.  Each issue is a tapestry woven with threads of spiritual insight, offering guidance and solace to souls seeking deeper communion with God.

As a Carmelite ministry, we aim to help readers pursue a life of prayer and deepen their relationship with God, and to live Christian life to the full. Our articles are never purely factual: they always contain some ‘nuggets’ of spiritual wisdom which readers can incorporate into their own life.

To this end, we require all contributors to adhere to the following editorial principles.

  • Prayer and Practice. All content must be original, insightful and meaningful. We aim to nourish Christian faith and practice through the medium of Carmelite spirituality. The magazine is not aimed at any single group (for example, pastors, religious, laity, etc.,) but desires to encourage conversation between all members of the Carmelite family, and with anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of our tradition and charism.
  • Generosity and Collaboration. Mount Carmel aspires to embody both generosity of spirit and intellectual hospitality, respecting the diversity and plurality of the people of God. We encourage active engagement with other spiritual traditions and faiths, enabling a deeper appreciation of both our own tradition and the wisdom of others. Similarly, we seek to foster a creative conversation between Carmelite spirituality and human disciplines, such as literature, history, culture and science.
  • Humility and Respect. We reject any tone of triumphalism, superiority, moralism or condemnation. Articles should seek to engage and illumine, rather than impose, criticise or diminish. The viewpoints and opinions of others are to be engaged with in a spirit of humility, openness and respect.
  • Hope and Honesty. Mount Carmel seeks to embody the Christian virtues of faith, hope and charity, while engaging with reality in a way that honestly acknowledges both our human frailty and the giftedness of our creation.
  • Accessibility and Depth. Mount Carmel seeks to present material that is accessible yet rigorous, devotional yet informed. We encourage narrative approaches that engage the imagination and heart, seeking language shaped by beauty, truth, and goodness rather than by abstraction or technicality. Our aim is to communicate Carmelite spirituality in ways that are faithful to tradition and inviting to all readers.
