Flos Carmeli

BY

A translation of the hymn ‘Flos Carmeli’ (attributed to St Simon Stock) set to the tune of Immaculate Mary.

Mount Carmel’s best blossom,
Bud-bearing rich vine;
Heav’n’s splendour, God’s Mother
But Maid for all time.

Meek Mother yet Virgin,
So kind may you be
To all Carmel’s children
O Star of the Sea!

Root of Jesse’s tree, now
You sprout a small flower,
Christ Jesus your infant;
Keep us close each hour!

O lily mid sharp thorns
You grow ever more;
Shield your fragile children,
Make all our minds pure.

Those fighting with demons
With scapular clothe,
Strong armour and safety
In battle with foes.

Through doubts give wise guidance,
Through trials bestow
Perpetual comfort
On all here below.

Sweet Mother rejoicing
Your joy in us pour;
Rule us from Mount Carmel,
We people of yours.

Key and gate of heaven,
Lead us Mother there,
Where your crown of glory
Will free us from care.
